Obstetric Anaesthesia

Labor analgesia and maternal-fetal medicine.

Obstetric anaesthesia has shifted toward programmed intermittent epidural boluses (PIEB), dural puncture epidural (DPE) techniques, and point-of-care ultrasound for difficult neuraxial placement. GCSA 2027 will cover management of the morbidly obese parturient, the rising incidence of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) and resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA), and viscoelastic-guided transfusion in postpartum hemorrhage. Sessions also address anaesthesia for fetal surgery, cardiac disease in pregnancy, the maternal mortality crisis and equity gaps, and post-cesarean multimodal analgesia using TAP, QL, and intrathecal morphine.

Focus areas
  • PIEB and DPE: optimizing labor analgesia quality
  • Placenta accreta spectrum: multidisciplinary planning and REBOA
  • Viscoelastic-guided transfusion in postpartum hemorrhage
  • Anaesthesia for fetal surgery and EXIT procedures
  • Cardiac disease in pregnancy: CARPREG II and modified WHO classes
  • Post-cesarean multimodal analgesia: TAP, QL, intrathecal morphine
  • Maternal mortality, racial disparities, and quality-improvement bundles
