Critical Care & Perioperative Medicine

ERAS protocols, ICU management and sepsis.

Perioperative medicine is converging with critical care around prehabilitation, individualized hemodynamic targets, and reduction of intraoperative hypotension to prevent AKI and myocardial injury (MINS). GCSA 2027 will cover GLP-1 agonists and aspiration risk under updated ASA guidance, perioperative management of SGLT2 inhibitors and euglycemic DKA, and the evolving evidence on dexmedetomidine versus propofol for ICU sedation (MENDS2, A2B). Sessions also address sepsis bundles in the post-Surviving-Sepsis-2021 era, balanced crystalloids, restrictive transfusion, and structured handover and rapid-response systems.

Focus areas
  • Prehabilitation: exercise, nutrition, and psychological optimization
  • Intraoperative hypotension, AKI, and myocardial injury (MINS)
  • GLP-1 agonists, SGLT2 inhibitors, and perioperative aspiration/DKA risk
  • ICU sedation: dexmedetomidine vs propofol (MENDS2, A2B)
  • Sepsis bundles, balanced crystalloids, and vasopressor selection
  • ERAS across colorectal, hepatobiliary, gynae-onc, and orthopedics
  • Postoperative delirium prevention and cognitive recovery
